The Great Lost Kinks Album

The title doesn't lie. This album is GREAT. A must have for all die hard Kinks lovers. I have just recently acquired this album, and haven't stopped listening to it yet. This album has 30 unreleased tracks spanning the time period from 1963 to 1970. Now, if this wasn't cool enough for you, here is the best part. This album was put together by the man himself Ray Davies. It was also produced by Ray Davies and Shel Talmy. And what a wonderful job they did. The sound is spectacular. Released in 2000 to a very limited run this is a very hard cd to get. I have put it in two zip files. Just to try and keep the sound quality (vbr 320). So waste no time, you wont be disappointed.

The Flying Burrito Brothers - Avalon Ballroom 1969

I just picked this up a few days ago. I love it. The sound is amazing. Amoeba Records did a great job on packaging this 2 CD Set. Well worth the $17 bucks I paid. The discs contain two concerts at The Avalon Ballroom in San Fransisco CA, on April 6-7, 1969. The Brothers opened for The Grateful Dead, which is why these gems are on tape to begin with. Owsley "Bear" Stanley recorded the evening. These tapes rested in the Bear's Vault for the next 38 years. With the determination of Dave Prinz we our now able hear these two fabulous nights. If you are a Gram Parsons fan you should not hesitate to own this. If you are not sure. Go check it out at Amoeba Records.

Moby Grape Re-issues

Moby Grape's first three albums are out today. All three will be released on cd(Stereo) with bonus material as well as on vinyl(Mono). Their first album is a must have. Sundazed is the label putting out these albums. If you buy them at there site you get some kinda deal. Might be worth checking out. Definitely get the first album self titled. It's the way to go. They will be releasing the rest of their albums in November.

Eduardo Mateo - Mateo Solo Bien Se Lame

What can I say about this record other than I truly love it. Nice, simple, clean and a hundred percent beautiful. The album was released in 1972. Vocals, guitar, and lite percussion. It is just a pure joy to listen to. It has a bit of a rough kinda one take feel to it. With count offs, and slating out song titles, couple of false starts. But that doesn't mean the production is bad, it is quite the opposite, it's amazing. I honestly know very little about Eduardo Mateo. So, here is a brief writeup taken from Wikipedia.

Eduardo Mateo (1940-1990) was a Uruguayan singer, songwriter, guitarist and arranger. He played a key role in the development of the modern Uruguayan pop music mixing rock, jazz, bossa nova, and local rhythms like candombe, in a similar way than Brazilian Tropicalismo. Musicians like Argentinian songwriter Juana Molina orAcademy Award winners Jorge Drexler and Gustavo Sataolalla cited Mateo as a big influence. Artists like Pedro Azner, Milton Nascimento or Leon Gieco have covered his songs.

Pink Floyd - Piper At The Gates Of Dawn

I picked up Pink Floyd's 40th Anniversary reissue of Piper at the Gates Of Dawn yesterday. I opted for the Deluxe version, which is the three cd set. The two cd set came out last week, which is the mono and stereo version of the album. The Deluxe has not only the third cd but a book that Syd Barrett put together and given to a a girlfriend at the time. Very strange little book I must say the title is called "Enjoy Fart." They did a very good job with the remaster and packaging. And it's nice to have the singles and alternate takes remastered on the 3rd disc. I can get rid of the low quality version I had. My only question is why three cds? The album isn't long, they could have put the mono and stereo version on one disc. At least that is what I thought before I got it. Now I like it this way. It gives each album it's own personal domain. I like it. Over all I would recommend the purchase of the Deluxe version over the 2 disc. The price is not allot more and definitely worth the coin. Forty years old, and still just as new, and scary, and wonderful, and tingly, as the day I first heard it. This album has put a great psychedelic ending to the 40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love.

The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band

The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band say that three times fast. This is a band definitely worth checking out. Their music is all over the place. From serious to silly, happy to sad, and just plain out wacky weird. They have a rather interesting history as well. Apparently Bob Markley the lead vocalist and creator of the band is quite the character. Rather than me try to get into explosive history check out this article The Legend of The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. It is well worth the read, and it really got me interested in their music. Though Markley has been titled as the weak link of the band, I find his part essential. Yes, at points his lack of ability is apparent, but I think this is what makes these albums so psychedelic. And it's this risk of experimentation that makes this music truely amazing. I highly recommend checking out "Volume 3" and "Markley, The Group", which is really their last record. They have five records out that are all very interesting. I'm really surprised that they are not more well known. There music stands up and surpasses many bands that have had greater success. I guess this is were Bob Markley probably helped in keeping his band underground. This band deserves more attention. To get all five albums checkout Contramao's Blog site. He has generously posted all of their records recently. Saving us all a great deal of time hunting out our psychedelic fix. I would use the Zshare download site, they don't make you wait for hours after each download. I started with their 3rd album titled "A child's Guide to Good and Evil Volume 3" and loved it. "Our Drummer Always Plays In The Nude" is probably one of my favorite songs on that record. And I hope they become a favorite band to you.

Clem Alford "Mirror Image"

Here is some nice mellow sitar heavy instrumental music. Released back in 1974 "Mirror Image" is a must have chill out record. This album is super relaxing. Man, if you can make it to the end with out hitting your head on the ceiling, I'll be amazed. It's definitely a stony delight.

So, grab yourself some wacky tobaccy, nutmeg, banana peels, or whatever it is you crazy kids do today, and put your mind onto an old new psychedelic sound.

Mesmerizing Eye - A Musical Light Show

This is about as psychedelic as it gets. Trippy stuff my man. Created by two producers Larry Goldberg and Hank Levine with a few studio freak musicians. Its got it all baby, fuzzed out guitars, sound effects galore and lots random brain sizzle. These instrumentals run right into each other like liquid. They got a thing for phones, ringing, ringing, ring, ring. Man, this is some far out shit, man. These guys were definitely on it 40 years ago. I think it might be time to take a trip back to 1967. So,Get your favorite psychedelic and enjoy the weirdness.

Birth Control

What can I say these guys rock. I just really got turned onto this band a few months back. My first introduction to them was Birth Control Live 1974. This record is unbelievable. To give you kind of an idea of their sound, it would be a cross between early Deep Purple, Humble Pie and a dash of Led Zeppelin. If you end up liking this record, definitely check out some of their studio albums. Rebirth and Operation are two really strong works. I find their early albums to be the best. The blog site Out Of Focus has lots albums to choose from. As well as many other great progressive rock bands. So, go over there and give them some love. You wont be disappointed. I can't thank them enough for helping my collection grow.
