The author, who passed away yesterday (January 27) at his home in New Hampshire, died of natural causes.
Salinger famously wrote the American classic Catcher In The Rye, the book which John Lennon's killer Mark Chapman carried with him on the day he shot the musician in December 1980.
Selling over 61 million copies since it was released in 1951, the book and its association with Lennon's death has inspired various films and documentaries, including 2007's Chapter 27, which starred Jared Leto.
